Facilitated Intercultural Development
Research shows that study abroad alone is not enough for effective student learning abroad.1 Students require a developmental approach with progressively more challenging intercultural growth opportunities. This approach is driven by intentional facilitation and skilled mentoring; culture-general frameworks and culture-specific content; and time for reflection. Bottom line: studies have shown that facilitation is required for true intercultural development.2
Molise Italian Studies, utilizing the Intercultural Development Inventory® (IDI®) and in partnership with the AFS Global Competence Certificate, will effectively facilitate your intercultural development and help you bridge cultural differences to effect positive change.
“The goal, I think, in both international and domestic diversity education…is to expand the idea of “us” to include all humanity, and to do so without losing the uniqueness of our different expressions of that humanity. We can only celebrate our differences in the context of common humanity, but we can only have common humanity if it includes those differences. These kinds of multicultural groups are not a natural condition of homo sapiens. But we can learn to make them work, in the same way that mathematics is not a natural human skill but can be learned. And, like STEM skills, intercultural skills must be learned for us to survive in the world we have created.”
